Who Is Kara Killmer’s Husband? Learn About the Chicago Fire Star’s Real-Life Love Story

Kara Killmer is best known for starring as one half of Brettsey on Chicago Fire, and although her chemistry with Jesse Spencer (who plays Matthew Casey) is undeniable, she is actually married in real life. So, who is Kara Killmer’s husband? Keep reading to find out.

Chicago Fire is NBC’s popular drama series that focuses on the lives of firefighters, rescue personnel and paramedics of the Chicago Fire Department’s fictional Firehouse 51. The show was created by Dick Wolf and premiered in 2012. It exists within Wolf’s One Chicago franchise, which includes the spinoff series Chicago Med, Chicago P.D. and the now-canceled Chicago Justice.

Killmer first joined the show during season 3. She stars as Sylvie Brett, an Ambulance 61 paramedic who transferred to Firehouse 51 to replace the late Leslie Shay. Brett instantly became a fan-favorite, mainly for her relationship with Captain Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), who proposed to her in the Season 11 finale. After nine seasons of playing Brett, however, Killmer is exiting the show and will make her final appearance in the Season 12 episode “Port in the Storm,” which will see Brett finally marry the love of her life.

Ahead of her last episode, Killmer opened up about her decision to leave, telling  TV Insider that Brett’s story arc had reached its “natural conclusion.” She added that fans will be “very satisfied” with the paramedic’s ending, noting that the Brettsey wedding is “the perfect conclusion for both Sylvie and me.

With Killmer’s final episode upon us, fans are naturally very curious about the actress’ personal life. As it turns out, her real-life romance rivals that of Brettsey’s.

Who is Kara Killmer’s husband in real life?

Who is Kara Killmer’s husband? The Chicago Fire star is married to Andrew Cheney. Like his wife, Cheney is also an actor. His most notable credits include the  TV series Vindication, the 2013 movie Seasons of Gray and the 2015 movie Beyond the Mask, the latter of which led him to met Killmer. The couple both starred on Beyond the Mask and they had an instant connection. During a 2015 interview with Scene Creek, Cheney discussed working with Killmer and had nothing but praise for his future wife. “Kara and I spent most of the time together, getting to know each other,” he said. “Extremely talented girl, very generous. It was a communal atmosphere, everyone was really giving.”

Cheney proposed to Killmer that year and the pair went on to tie the knot in 2016, though they did not share any photos from the wedding. Killmer and Cheney are very private when it comes to their relationship. Killmer hardly ever posts photos of her husband on social media, nor does she speak about him publicly. The Texas native did, however, discuss her and Cheney’s values during a rare interview with Fort Worth Magazine. After explaining that she experienced “a strong sense of community” growing up, Killmer noted that community is something she and Cheney seek out in the places they live. “That’s something my husband and I continue to look for wherever it is that we live or wherever we end up or wind up filming. That’s something that we prioritize. I think it really does make a difference,” she said.

In October 2023, Killmer shared a rare photo of her and her husband enjoying a date night on Instagram. Along with several One Chicago cast members, including Chicago Med‘s Torrey Devitto and Nick Gehlfuss and Chicago P.D.‘s Marina Squerciati, Killmer and Cheney explored The Blue Paradox exhibit at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. In the photo, the duo held hands as they strolled through a corridor made to look like the ocean. “My hubby, @andrewcheney, and I had an enlightening evening at @msichicago to see #theblueparadox exhibit. It was a delightful night discussing the impact of our use of plastics and it’s impact on our oceans and our health,” she captioned the post in part.
